DMK Government has transformed women Self Help Groups into mass movement: Stalin
Ariyalur, Feb 2 : Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minster M K Stalin has said the DMK Government, since 1989, has transformed women Self Help Groups (SHG) into a mass movement by providing revolving funds for economic transformation to 1,88,156 groups.
Inaugurating state-of-the-art new collectorate complex, built at a cost of Rs 13.75 crore, here last night, he pointed out that people in the state, especially women, desiring the DMK's assumption of power for sixth term was evident by their eagerness to see the completion of various welfare schemes initiated by the government.
He said unlike the AIADMK which, during its regime, discontinued people-oriented schemes initiated by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, the DMK had no reservations in continuing with schemes that benefitted people.
Mr Stalin cited the instance of DMK strengthening the noon meal scheme initiated by former chief minister MGR and took a dig at the AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa for keeping the Samathuvapuram scheme in limbo from 2001 to 2006.
''The DMK's focus has all along been to reach out to the needy through pioneering schemes like Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam and Kalaignar Housing Scheme,'' he said.
He personally handed over cheques for revolving funds to the tune of Rs 15.74 crore to 1,512 SHGs and distributed welfare schemes.
He also launched several projects at a total value of Rs 123 crore.
Palai Amaramoorthy, MLA, and others also spoke on the occasion yesterday.
