Ashok That people in the State, especially women, desiring the DMK's assumption of power for a sixth term is evident by their eagerness to see the completion of the various welfare schemes initiated by the Government, the Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said on Tuesday.
Inaugurating the Rs.13.75 crore state-of-art Collectorate Complex, distributing welfare schemes, and launching several projects at a total value of Rs.123 crore, Mr. Stalin pointed out that unlike the AIADMK which, during its regime, discontinued people-oriented schemes initiated by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, the DMK had no reservations in continuing with schemes that benefitted the people.
He cited the instance of the DMK strengthening the noon meal scheme initiated by late Chief Minister MGR and took a dig at the AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa for keeping the Samathuvapuram scheme in limbo from 2001 to 2006. The DMK's focus has all along been to reach out to the needy through pioneering schemes like Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam and Kalaignar Housing Scheme.
The DMK Government has, since 1989, transformed women SHGs into a mass movement by providing revolving funds for economic transformation to 1,88,156 groups, he said. Mr. Stalin personally handed over cheques for revolving funds to the tune of Rs. 15.74 crore to 1,512 SHGS.
Likewise, during the four-and-a-half years of its current stint, the DMK government has commissioned new Collectorate complexes in Tirunelveli, Krishnagiri, Salem, Tiruchi, Dharmapuri, and Ariyalur districts. Though the AIADMK denied Ariyalur the status of a district, the DMK revived it in deference to the aspirations of the people in the taluks of Ariyalur, Udayarpalayam and Senthurai. Referring to the requests made earlier by Collector T.K. Ponnuswamy, and VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan for fulfilling the pending requirements that are vital for the functioning of the district, the Deputy Chief Minister assured to do the needful. Mr. Stalin, who earlier inaugurated the fourth samathuvapuram in the district at Mannuzhi hamlet in Thelur Panchayat, said 36 more Samathuvapurams will be established for strengthening social quality for 2010-11.
The charter of demands listed by Mr. Thirumavalavan and the Ariyalur MLA Palai Amaramoorthy included modernisation of the Government owned cement factory in Ariyalur and making the Jayankondam Lignite Project materialise.
Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment D. Napoleon also spoke. State Minister for Revenue and Housing I. Periyasami presided over.
